Wildlife Across the Islands by Air Tahiti Pass

Sharing the water with a humpback whale off Moorea, watching it hang almost motionless below me, rearranged my sense of how big the ocean really is. French Polynesia turns out to be one of the better places on earth to meet wildlife, and the best encounters are scattered across different islands. An Air Tahiti Pass is how I reach them in a single trip rather than picking just one. I am careful to keep a respectful distance and to use operators who follow the rules, because these are wild animals. Here is what I look for and where, and how I plan the timing.

Whales and dolphins, with the seasons in mind

From roughly July to November, humpback whales migrate through these waters to calve, and Moorea is one of the most reliable places to see them, with regulated swim tours run by careful operators. The Austral island of Rurutu is famous specifically for whale season and is reachable on the pass for those who want to build a trip around it. Year-round, Rangiroa's Tiputa Pass often has resident spinner and bottlenose dolphins riding the current. I always book with operators who keep their distance and limit numbers in the water, because pushy boats stress the animals. Whale season shifts a little each year, so confirm current timing before you plan.

Rays, sharks and turtles in the lagoons

You do not need to be a diver to meet a lot of marine life here. Bora Bora and Moorea both have lagoon tours where you can snorkel near rays and reef sharks in shallow, warm water, which is a gentle introduction even for kids. Maupiti, a quieter island, has manta rays that visit cleaning stations in its lagoon. On atolls like Tikehau I have watched green sea turtles glide over the coral. I keep my distance, never chase or touch, and skip any operator that offers to feed the animals, since feeding changes their behaviour. The short flights between these islands make it realistic to sample several lagoons in one trip.

Birds, land life and planning the trip

The atolls and smaller islets are quietly excellent for seabirds, with terns, noddies and boobies nesting in numbers, and the protected atoll near Tahiti is known as a bird sanctuary. The islands have little in the way of large land animals, so the wildlife story here is mostly about the sea and the sky. I plan my route around the seasons, putting whale months at the centre if that is the goal, and let the pass connect the islands. A good pair of binoculars and a reef-safe sunscreen go in my bag every time. Routes and schedules can change, so I confirm the current network when I book rather than relying on an old map.
