Romantic Island Getaways Around Tahiti

We marked an anniversary on Maupiti, the small island you reach with a short hop and then a boat across the lagoon, and it remains the quietest, most romantic place I have stayed in French Polynesia. A romantic trip here does not have to mean only Bora Bora, though Bora Bora earns its reputation. With the Air Tahiti Pass we link two or three islands and let each one do something different for the mood of the trip. I plan for slow mornings, one big lagoon day, and an early flight only when it buys us somewhere special. Here is how I think about a couples' trip across the islands.

Using the pass to build a couples' route

The Air Tahiti Pass is a multi-island air pass on Air Tahiti, and for a couple it makes a two or three island honeymoon-style route simple to book as one thing. I usually pair a well-known island like Bora Bora with a quieter one such as Maupiti or Taha'a, so the trip has both the famous lagoon and a stretch of calm. The named passes cover different island sets, so I choose the one that matches our route. Schedules and fares vary, so I confirm the current details before booking.

Islands for a quiet, romantic stretch

Taha'a, wrapped in the same lagoon as Raiatea, is known for vanilla farms and small over-water stays without the crowds. Maupiti feels like Bora Bora did decades ago, with no large resorts and a lagoon you can swim straight into. Huahine is lush and slow, good for couples who like a little culture and quiet beaches together. I tend to spend our last nights on the calmest island so the trip ends gently rather than with a rush to the airport.

Small choices that make the trip

For a romantic getaway I book one over-water or beachfront room as the splurge and keep the other nights simpler, which stretches the budget without losing the magic. A private lagoon outing at sunset has been worth more to us than any add-on. I also keep the itinerary loose, because inter-island flights can move with the weather and a flexible plan keeps a delay from spoiling the day. Sharing a slow dinner of local fish beats an over-scheduled evening every time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bora Bora the only romantic island?

No. Bora Bora is lovely, but Maupiti, Taha'a and Huahine are quieter and often more affordable. Pairing a famous island with a calm one gives a couples' trip real range.

Can we do a multi-island honeymoon on the pass?

Yes. The Air Tahiti Pass is built for linking several islands on one pass, which suits a honeymoon route. Confirm current fares and schedules with Air Tahiti when you book.

How many islands for a romantic week?

Two or three is my sweet spot. It leaves time for slow mornings and one big lagoon day on each, instead of spending the trip in transit.
