The Tuamotus are where I fell for drift diving, hanging in the current at Tiputa Pass on Rangiroa while grey reef sharks slid past in the blue. These low coral atolls scattered northeast of Tahiti are some of the finest diving in the South Pacific, and the Tuamotu version of the Air Tahiti Pass is how I string a few of them together. Air Tahiti flies the legs and the pass bundles them, which we arrange through Far & Away Adventures. Routes and dive-boat schedules can change with the seasons, so I confirm current details when I book and dive within the limits of my certification. These are the atolls I plan a diving trip around.
Rangiroa and the famous Tiputa Pass
Rangiroa is one of the largest atolls in the world, and its passes funnel huge volumes of water in and out with the tide. Drifting Tiputa on an incoming current, I've shared the water with grey reef sharks, eagle rays and resident bottlenose dolphins. It's a current dive, so I go with a local operator who reads the tide tables and matches the dive to my experience.

Fakarava's UNESCO biosphere and the south pass
Fakarava is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and its southern pass at Tetamanu is famous for the wall of grey reef sharks that gathers there. Diving it feels like floating into a living documentary, and the protected status means the reef is in genuinely good shape. I treat Fakarava as the centrepiece of any Tuamotu diving trip and give it several days.
Tikehau and Manihi for a gentler pace
When I want easier water, Tikehau's pink-sand rim and manta cleaning stations make for relaxed, colourful diving and snorkelling. Manihi, one of the cradles of Tahiti's black-pearl farming, pairs quiet diving with a look at the pearl trade. Both atolls round out a trip that might otherwise be all high-current adrenaline.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need advanced certification to dive the Tuamotus?
The famous pass dives at Rangiroa and Fakarava involve current and are best with some experience, while Tikehau and Manihi offer gentler options. Always dive within your certification, and confirm conditions and schedules with your local operator, as they can change.
Which Tuamotu atolls go well together on the pass?
I like combining Rangiroa and Fakarava for the big-current pass dives, then adding Tikehau for a softer day. The Tuamotu Pass is what makes hopping between these atolls on one set of flights practical.
When is the best time to dive the Tuamotus?
Diving is good much of the year, with different seasons bringing different marine life such as the shark aggregations at Fakarava. Visibility and boat schedules vary, so I check current conditions with operators when I plan dates.
