The Dives I Plan Around the Air Tahiti Pass

I'll be honest, the diving is the reason I keep going back to French Polynesia. Drifting through Rangiroa's Tiputa Pass with dolphins cutting past was one of the best dives of my life, and it's a flight away from the lagoon snorkelling that suits a casual day. Because the Air Tahiti Pass links the islands, I can string together very different underwater days on one trip. I'm a keen recreational diver, not an instructor, so I book through local operators and listen to their briefings. Here's how I'd plan the diving side of a route.

The Tuamotu passes for big-water diving

The Tuamotu atolls are where the serious action is. Rangiroa's Tiputa Pass is famous for drift dives where the current carries you past sharks, dolphins and dense schools of fish. Fakarava, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, has its celebrated south-pass wall of grey reef sharks that you watch from the edge of the channel. These are current-driven dives best done with a local operator who knows the tides, and I always go with their plan rather than my own.

Moorea and Bora Bora for gentler days

Not every dive needs to be a big-current adventure. Around Moorea I've had lovely, relaxed dives with lemon sharks and rays in clear, calmer water, which suits a mixed group or a day when you just want easy. Bora Bora's lagoon is better known for manta and ray encounters that even snorkellers can enjoy. I like to balance a route so the demanding atoll dives sit next to a couple of these easier days rather than back to back.

Sequencing dives with your flights

The catch with diving and flying is timing, so I build in surface time before any inter-island flight after diving and follow my operator's guidance on that gap. I confirm my Air Tahiti flight days first, since routes and schedules can change and are best verified at booking, then slot the dive days to fit. I also book the marquee dives, like the Fakarava south pass, ahead because spots are limited. A little sequencing keeps the trip both safe and full.

Frequently asked questions

What's the most famous dive here?

For me it's Rangiroa's Tiputa Pass drift dive and Fakarava's south-pass wall of sharks. Both are current-driven dives in the Tuamotus, so go with a local operator who reads the tides.

Are there dives for less experienced divers?

Yes. Moorea and Bora Bora offer gentler dives and ray encounters in calmer water. I like pairing those with the demanding atoll dives so the trip isn't all big current.

How do I handle diving and flying?

Leave surface time before any inter-island flight and follow your operator's guidance. Confirm flight days first, since schedules can change, then fit your dive days around them.
