Society Islands Luxury Resorts, Bora Bora Pass

The view from an overwater room on Bora Bora's lagoon, with Mount Otemanu rising across the water, is one of those scenes that genuinely lives up to its reputation. The Bora Bora version of the Air Tahiti Pass is how I reach it, and how I pair it with the quieter high-end stays elsewhere in the Society Islands. Air Tahiti flies the legs from Pape'ete and the pass bundles them, which we set up for travellers through Far & Away Adventures. Routes and schedules shift seasonally, so I confirm current flight details when I book. What I've learned over several trips is that the best luxury itineraries don't park you on one island; they move you between two or three.

Bora Bora's overwater bungalows

Bora Bora earned its name on the strength of its lagoon and its overwater bungalows, and for a first trip I do think it's worth the splurge. I look for a resort on one of the outer motu for the calmest water and the clearest view back to the main island. A few nights here is the centrepiece, but I rarely make it the whole trip, because the island's fame also means its highest prices.

Taha'a for quiet, vanilla-scented luxury

A short flight away, Taha'a is wrapped in the same lagoon system as Raiatea and is known for its vanilla plantations and a couple of intimate high-end resorts. The pace is slower and the crowds thinner, and the snorkelling in the coral garden between the motu is some of the easiest I've done. I often slot Taha'a in after Bora Bora to let a trip exhale.

Moorea to start or end the trip

Moorea sits a quick hop from Tahiti and offers strong resorts at a gentler price point, with dramatic green peaks behind the lagoon. I like using it as the soft landing at the start or the wind-down at the end, especially since it's close to the international airport. Strung together with the pass, Moorea, Bora Bora and Taha'a make a far more interesting trip than any single island alone.

Frequently asked questions

Which Society Islands have the best luxury resorts?

Bora Bora is the headline for overwater bungalows, Taha'a offers quieter intimate luxury, and Moorea gives strong resorts at a gentler price. I combine them on the Bora Bora Pass rather than staying put on one island.

Is Bora Bora worth the high price?

For a milestone trip I think a few nights are worth it, but I balance the cost by pairing Bora Bora with Taha'a or Moorea. That mix gives the icon without making the whole trip the most expensive option.

How do I get between the islands?

Air Tahiti flies the inter-island legs and the Bora Bora Pass bundles them into one product. Routes and schedules can change seasonally, so I confirm the current details with the airline when I book.
