Multi-Island Travel Made Simple in Polynesia

The reason I keep coming back to French Polynesia is that no two islands feel the same, and seeing several on one trip is the whole point for me. Booking each inter-island flight separately used to make that a chore, until I started using the Air Tahiti Pass. Air Tahiti is the domestic airline, and the pass bundles a set of inter-island flights into one product, with named versions built around different island groups. After a few multi-island loops I've settled on a way of planning that keeps the booking simple. Here's how I approach it.

Decide the shape of the trip first

Before I look at any flight, I decide roughly how many islands and how many days, then pick the pass version whose coverage fits. The named passes each serve a different cluster, and which islands they include can vary and change, so I confirm the current coverage with Air Tahiti before booking. Getting the shape right first makes everything after it easier.

Sequence to avoid backtracking

Many routes thread through Tahiti, so a careless order can have you doubling back through the same airport. I lay the islands out in a loop or a one-way line so each flight moves me forward. Specific routings vary by season and can change, so I check the live map rather than assuming the islands connect the way I'd like.

Keep accommodation flexible until flights are set

I lock the flight order before I commit to non-refundable stays, because island timetables can change. Once the routing is confirmed I match accommodation to it, which avoids the trap of a hotel booking that no longer fits the flights. It's a small discipline that has saved me money more than once.

Frequently asked questions

How many islands is too many?

For most trips I'd cap it at three or four to keep the pace enjoyable. The right number depends on your days and the pass coverage, which varies and can change.

Can I add islands after I start?

Some passes allow changes depending on fare conditions, which vary and can change. I confirm the specific terms at booking so I know my options before I travel.

Is the pass cheaper than separate tickets?

For three or more islands it often works out simpler and better value, but it depends on your route. Compare both for your islands, since fares vary and can change.
