Tuamotu Pass Highlights: Rangiroa, Fakarava, Tikehau

Rangiroa was where I first understood what an atoll really is: a thin ring of coral and palms holding a lagoon so big it has its own horizon. We have come back to the Tuamotus more than any other part of French Polynesia, and the diving is the reason. On the Tuamotu Pass we usually link Rangiroa, Fakarava and Tikehau, because each one does something the others do not. I am a cautious diver and these waters still left me grinning. Here is what I would not skip.

Rangiroa and the Tiputa Pass

The Tiputa Pass at Rangiroa is the kind of dive you talk about for years. On the incoming tide we drifted with the current while grey reef sharks held station below and bottlenose dolphins played in the surge. You do not need to be an expert, but you do want a good operator and the right tide, so listen to the local dive shops on timing. Between dives, the Blue Lagoon excursion is a gentle way to spend a half day.

Fakarava, a UNESCO biosphere

Fakarava is protected as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and its southern pass is known for a wall of hundreds of grouper and the sharks that follow them. We dived it slowly with a guide and let the current do the work. The village of Rotoava on the north end is tiny and friendly, with a few pensions and bicycles for getting around. It feels remote in the best way.

Tikehau and planning your hops

Tikehau is smaller and softer, known for its pinkish sand and a lagoon thick with fish. We spent our days snorkelling off the motu and doing very little else, which was exactly right. Air Tahiti connects these atolls on schedules that shift by season, so the Tuamotu Pass is the tidy way to chain them together. Routes and timings can change, so confirm the current details when you book.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need diving experience for the Tuamotus?

For the famous pass dives at Rangiroa and Fakarava, some certified experience and comfort with current help a lot. Snorkellers and beginners still have plenty to see, and dive shops run courses and easier sites too.

Which Tuamotu atoll is best for a first visit?

Rangiroa is the easiest introduction, with the most infrastructure and the Tiputa Pass. Fakarava suits divers, and Tikehau is the quiet one. We like combining at least two.

When is the best time to dive the Tuamotus?

Diving is good year-round, though many people prefer the drier months from roughly May to October. Conditions and visibility vary with tide and weather, so plan around the local advice.
