Some travellers come to French Polynesia to lie still on a beach, and that's lovely, but I come to move. Sweating up Moorea's Three Coconuts Pass for the view over both bays is exactly the kind of day I plan a trip around. The Discovery version of the Air Tahiti Pass keeps me in the active, accessible Society Islands, where the hiking, paddling and snorkelling are excellent and the flights between them are short. Air Tahiti operates the legs and the pass bundles them, which we set up through Far & Away Adventures, and because routes and schedules change seasonally I confirm the current details when I book. These are the adventure days I keep coming back for.
Hiking the green peaks of Moorea
Moorea is my favourite island for walking, with the Three Coconuts Pass and the trails around the Belvedere lookout giving you ridgelines, jungle and views over Cook's and Opunohu bays. The terrain can be muddy and steep, so I go with proper shoes and often a local guide for the longer routes. A short flight from Tahiti puts all of this within reach on the first or last day of a trip.

Paddling and snorkelling Huahine's lagoon
Huahine feels wilder and less developed than its neighbours, which is exactly why I like it. I rent a kayak to explore the quiet lagoon, snorkel the coral, and visit the ancient marae stone sites scattered around the island between water sessions. It's the kind of place where an active day and a cultural one blur happily together.
River and reef adventures on Raiatea
Raiatea is the only island in French Polynesia with a navigable river, the Faaroa, and paddling up it through the lush valley is a calm, green change of pace. The island is also a sailing hub, and the sacred marae at Taputapuatea, a UNESCO site, rewards a half day ashore. Combined on the Discovery Pass, these islands give a week that's active from start to finish.

Frequently asked questions
Which islands suit active travellers on the Discovery Pass?
Moorea for hiking, Huahine for paddling and snorkelling, and Raiatea for its river and sailing are my core three. The Discovery Pass keeps these closer Society Islands on one set of flights.
Do I need a guide for the hikes?
The shorter walks you can do independently, but for Moorea's longer ridge routes I take a local guide for the trail-finding and the stories. Conditions can be muddy and change with the weather, so I check before heading out.
Can I mix adventure with culture on one trip?
Absolutely, and it's how I plan most trips. Huahine and Raiatea in particular put ancient marae sites a short distance from the lagoon, so an active morning and a cultural afternoon fit the same day.
