Comparing French Polynesia's Islands, Side by Side

People often ask me which island in French Polynesia is the best, and my honest answer is that they aren't really competing, they're doing different jobs. Over several trips I've come to think of them by what they're good for: lagoon time, hiking, culture, or diving. The Air Tahiti Pass is what lets you sample more than one without paying for separate flights each time. I'll lay out how the main islands compare. That way you can pick the two or three that fit the trip you actually want.

Lagoon and resort islands

Bora Bora and Taha'a are where the famous lagoons and overwater bungalows sit. Bora Bora is the showpiece and the busiest; Taha'a is quieter and built around vanilla farms. If your priority is swimming, snorkelling and a slower pace, this is the pair I'd compare first.

Green peaks and hiking

Moorea and Tahiti itself are the ones I send hikers to. Moorea's interior trails open onto views over two bays, and Tahiti has waterfalls and a rugged interior most visitors never see. Both are close to the main airport, which keeps flight time down on a pass routing.

Culture and diving

For living Polynesian culture I point people to the Marquesas, and for renowned diving to the Tuamotu atolls like Fakarava and Rangiroa. These are farther out, so flights are longer and run less often. Air Tahiti's routes and frequencies vary by season, so I confirm the current schedule before building either into a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Bora Bora or Moorea for a first trip?

If you want the iconic lagoon, Bora Bora; if you want green hikes and lower cost, Moorea. Many people I talk to fit both into one Air Tahiti Pass routing.

Which islands suit divers?

The Tuamotu atolls, especially Fakarava and Rangiroa, are the standouts. They're farther from Tahiti, so check current flight days before you commit.

Can I compare islands without overspending?

Yes, the pass lets you mix a pricier island with a quieter, cheaper one. I always price the pass against separate fares at booking to confirm the saving for my route.
