Romantic Island-Hopping with the Air Tahiti Pass

My husband and I have done the slow two-island version of French Polynesia and the busier three-island version, and the calmer one wins every time. The Air Tahiti Pass let us start on Moorea, drift over to Taha'a for vanilla and quiet, then finish on Bora Bora without rebooking flights along the way. What I love is that the short hops feel like part of the romance rather than a chore. We watched the lagoon change colour from the plane each time we landed. If you're planning a trip for two, here's how I'd sequence it.

Start gentle on Moorea

Moorea is a short flight from Tahiti and a soft landing for couples, with green peaks, a calm lagoon, and far fewer people than Bora Bora. We rented a little place near Cook's Bay and spent the first two days doing very little. It's my favourite spot to shake off the long-haul travel before moving on.

Slow down on Taha'a

Taha'a is wrapped in vanilla plantations and reached by a quick hop plus a boat transfer, so I always check the current connections when I book. The motu here are quiet, and the snorkelling in the coral garden between Taha'a and Raiatea is some of the easiest I've done. It's the kind of place where you lose track of the day.

Finish on Bora Bora

We saved Bora Bora for last because the overwater bungalows feel like a proper send-off. The flights between islands are short, but Air Tahiti's schedules can change seasonally, so I confirm the timetable before locking in our final nights. Ending here meant we flew back to Tahiti for our international connection with time to spare.

Frequently asked questions

What's the most romantic island order?

I like easing in on Moorea, slowing down on Taha'a, then finishing on Bora Bora. The Air Tahiti Pass makes that sequence simple because the inter-island flights are already bundled.

How long should a couples trip be?

Ten to fourteen nights lets you give three islands real time. Routes and flight frequencies vary by season, so build a little buffer before your international flight home.

Are overwater bungalows worth it?

For a special trip, we think so, at least for a few nights. They're a splurge, so I often mix a bungalow stay with a simpler pension earlier in the trip to balance the budget.
