Where I Stay on Each Air Tahiti Pass Island

On my first French Polynesia trip I booked a pricey resort for the whole stay, then realised I'd be on a different island every few nights. Now I match the lodging to the island and to my flight days, and the Air Tahiti Pass makes that easy because I'm moving between islands on Air Tahiti, the domestic carrier. I've stayed in a simple family pension above Papeete and a garden bungalow on Moorea on the same trip, and both fit the rhythm of the day. What follows is how I actually choose a place to sleep on each leg. I'm not the airline and I don't book your rooms, but I plan a lot of these routes.

Tahiti and Moorea, where most trips start

Almost every Air Tahiti Pass itinerary touches Tahiti, since the international airport at Faa'a is the hub. I rarely linger long in Papeete, so I look for a small pension or city hotel near the waterfront, close to the morning market and the roulottes at Place Vaiete. Moorea is a short hop away and is where I slow down, usually in a beachside bungalow on the north coast near Temae or in the Cook's Bay area. For a first or last night before a long flight home, I keep it simple and near the airport so I'm not rushing a transfer.

Bora Bora, Huahine and the quieter Society Islands

Bora Bora is the one island where I'll splurge on an overwater bungalow if the budget allows, but I've also had a fine time in a mainland pension on the Matira side with the same lagoon out front. Huahine is my pick when I want something low-key and local, with family-run guesthouses and far fewer crowds. Raiatea and Taha'a suit travellers who want sailing and the famous vanilla farms over nightlife. My rule is to match the island's character to what I want that week rather than booking the same style of room everywhere.

Booking your rooms around your flight days

The piece people forget is that lodging has to line up with the inter-island flights on the pass. I always confirm my Air Tahiti flight days first, then book rooms to match, because routes and schedules can change and are best verified at the time of booking. I try not to schedule a flight and a checkout on a tight clock, and on islands with limited service I'll add a buffer night. If a pension only has a few rooms, I reserve well ahead, since small properties fill faster than the big resorts.

Frequently asked questions

Should I book all my accommodation before I arrive?

I book the small pensions ahead because they have only a handful of rooms, but I leave a little flexibility on the bigger islands. Pin your flight days first, since those anchor everything else.

Are overwater bungalows the only good option?

Not at all. I've stayed in mainland pensions with the same lagoon views for a fraction of the cost. Overwater bungalows are special, but they're a choice, not a requirement.

How do I match lodging to my pass route?

Confirm your Air Tahiti flight days first, then book rooms to fit. Schedules can change, so verify the current flights at booking and leave a buffer where service is limited.
