My Favourite Beaches on the Air Tahiti Pass

People assume every island in French Polynesia has the same beach, and they're often surprised when I tell them how different they are. Some islands are built up from coral and have long white strands, while others are high volcanic islands where the best swimming is at a handful of specific spots. Because I move between islands on the Air Tahiti Pass, I've been able to compare them side by side over several trips. My short list isn't the most famous beaches so much as the ones I keep going back to. Here's where I'd send a friend who loves the water.

Matira on Bora Bora, the one everyone means

Matira Beach is the long public white-sand stretch at the southern tip of Bora Bora, and it earns its reputation. The water stays shallow and warm a long way out, which makes it easy for a lazy float or for kids wading in. I like getting there earlier in the day before the lagoon tours fill the water taxis. It's free and open, so you don't need a resort to enjoy it, and a simple snack from a nearby shop is all I bring.

Temae on Moorea and the high-island beaches

Moorea is a high volcanic island, so the beach situation is different from Bora Bora. Temae, on the northeast coast near the airport, is my go-to for a real sand beach with a view across to Tahiti. The snorkelling just off the sand is good, and I've drifted over rays and small reef fish there more than once. On the high islands I plan around a couple of known spots rather than expecting beach everywhere.

The Tuamotu atolls for something wilder

If you want the deserted-strand feeling, the Tuamotu atolls like Rangiroa and Fakarava deliver it, including the soft pink-tinted sands you'll hear about at Rangiroa. These are flat coral atolls, so the appeal is the lagoon and the quiet rather than mountains behind you. Reaching them means an inter-island flight, and those routes and schedules can change, so I confirm the current details when I book. I treat an atoll day as the slow, unplugged part of the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Which island has the best beach?

For a classic white-sand swim I'd point you to Matira on Bora Bora. For snorkelling off the sand, Temae on Moorea is my pick. They're different experiences, which is why I like seeing both on one pass.

Do I need to pay to use the beaches?

Matira is a public beach and free to enjoy. On the high islands, access varies, so I plan around the well-known public spots rather than assuming every shoreline is open.

Are the atoll beaches worth a separate flight?

If you love quiet, yes. The Tuamotu atolls feel wilder and emptier. Just remember inter-island flights can change, so confirm the current schedule when you book.
