Family Trips Across French Polynesia, From Experience

On Moorea my youngest once spent a whole afternoon counting rays in the shallows off Ta'ahiamanu, the public beach near Papetoai. That trip taught me that family travel here works best when you slow down and let the islands set the pace. We have done two and three islands in one go with the Air Tahiti Pass, and the pass is what makes a multi-stop family trip manageable. I plan around naps, short flights, and a lot of lagoon time rather than packed days. Here is how I approach a family trip across the islands.

How the Air Tahiti Pass fits a family trip

The Air Tahiti Pass is a multi-island air pass on Air Tahiti, the domestic airline, and for a family it removes the headache of booking each leg separately. We pick a few islands that link sensibly, build the route around the pass, and keep flight days short so the kids are not worn out. Named passes such as the Discovery and Bora Bora passes cover different island sets, so I match the pass to where we actually want to go. Fares, routes and schedules change, so I confirm the current details with Air Tahiti when I book.

Islands that work well with kids

Moorea is my first choice with children because the lagoon is calm and shallow in many spots and you can reach beaches without a boat. Tahiti itself has easy days out, markets and a road that rings the island. Bora Bora and Huahine add more lagoon time once the little ones are comfortable in the water. We tend to keep to two or three islands rather than chasing every name on the map, which leaves room for the slow mornings that make a family trip enjoyable.

Pacing, packing and the practical side

With kids I build in a rest island, usually the one with the simplest beach access, and treat the flight between islands as the day's main event rather than squeezing one in. Reef shoes, rash guards and a dry bag earn their place in every bag we pack. I also keep some slack in the plan because inter-island flights can shift with weather, and a relaxed buffer beats a missed connection with tired children. Booking rooms that sleep four under one roof saves money and sanity.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Air Tahiti Pass good for families?

Yes. It lets you string several islands together on one pass instead of buying each flight on its own, which simplifies a multi-stop family trip. Confirm current fares and routes with Air Tahiti when you book.

How many islands should we visit with young kids?

From experience, two or three is plenty. Short flights and calm lagoons matter more than ticking off names, and fewer stops means more rest and less packing and repacking.

Which island is easiest with small children?

Moorea is my pick for its calm, shallow lagoon and easy beach access without needing a boat. Tahiti works well too for road trips and markets.
