Bora Bora Pass Stops: Raiatea, Huahine, Bora Bora

Most people fly straight to Bora Bora and stop there, which means they miss the two islands I find more interesting. The Bora Bora Pass actually covers the Leeward Society Islands, so I use it to land on Raiatea and Huahine first and save Bora Bora for last. That order lets the trip build instead of peaking on day one. I have done this loop with family and on my own, and it works both ways. Here is how each stop earns its place.

Raiatea and the sacred marae

Raiatea is the spiritual centre of the region, home to Taputapuatea, a marae complex listed by UNESCO and tied to the great Polynesian voyaging traditions. Standing there, you feel why this island mattered to navigators across the Pacific. Raiatea is also the sailing hub of French Polynesia, so it is easy to pick up a day on the water. I always build in time for the marae and a slow lunch afterward.

Huahine, the quiet garden island

Huahine is lush, low-key and full of archaeology, with old stone fish traps and marae scattered around Lake Fauna Nui. I rented a car and spent a day driving between vanilla farms, small beaches and a village shop or two. It has a fraction of Bora Bora visitors and rewards you for slowing down. If I had to pick one underrated island in the group, this is it.

Bora Bora and connecting the dots

Bora Bora earns its reputation: Mount Otemanu rising over a lagoon of deep blues, and overwater bungalows if that is your style. I treat it as the finale and spend my days on the water rather than rushing between islands. Air Tahiti links the Leewards on frequent but seasonal schedules, so the pass keeps the hops simple. Routes and fares can change, so confirm the current details when you book.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Bora Bora Pass include other islands?

Yes. Despite the name, it covers the Leeward Society Islands, which lets you add Raiatea and Huahine, and sometimes Maupiti, on the same pass rather than only flying to Bora Bora.

Which island should I visit first?

I prefer Raiatea or Huahine first and Bora Bora last, so the trip builds toward the showpiece. Either way, check the flight days, since not every leg runs daily.

How long should this loop take?

Seven to ten days lets you give each island two or three nights without feeling rushed. Allow buffer around flights in case a schedule shifts.
