Austral Islands Nature Tours by Australes Pass

I'll never forget my first morning off Rurutu, watching a humpback whale and her calf move slowly through the blue while our small boat held its distance. The Austral Islands sit well south of Tahiti, cooler and far quieter than the postcard islands, and the Australes version of the Air Tahiti Pass is what makes a multi-island loop down there workable. Air Tahiti flies the legs and the pass bundles them, which we set up for travellers through Far & Away Adventures. Flights this far south run on seasonal schedules that can change, so I confirm the current details when I book. For me the draw is entirely natural: whales, caves, lagoons and birds you won't easily see anywhere else.

Whale season off Rurutu

From roughly July to October, humpback whales gather in the waters around Rurutu, and the island has become one of the better places in the South Pacific to encounter them respectfully. I book my dates inside that window and go out with operators who keep a careful distance and follow the local rules. Even from shore you sometimes catch a breach, but a guided boat morning is what I'd plan the trip around.

Caves, makatea and the lagoon at Raivavae

Rurutu's raised limestone, called makatea, hides caves full of stalactites that local guides will walk you through. A short hop away, Raivavae wraps a high green island in a wide, calm lagoon dotted with small motu, and a slow boat day there is one of the quietest I've spent in French Polynesia. The two islands together make a tidy nature pairing on the pass.

Birdlife on Rimatara and quiet Tubuai

Rimatara is the stronghold of the 'ura, a small red-and-green lorikeet that's become a real conservation story in the Australs. Tubuai, the administrative centre, is flatter and farmed, with a lagoon good for an easy paddle and gentle walking. Neither island is built for crowds, which is exactly why I send nature-minded travellers down here.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for the Austral Islands?

For whales off Rurutu, the roughly July to October season is the reason to come. The Australs are cooler year-round than Tahiti, so pack a layer, and confirm seasonal flight schedules with Air Tahiti because they can change.

Which Austral Islands work best together on the pass?

I like pairing Rurutu for whales and caves with Raivavae for its lagoon, and adding Rimatara if birds interest you. The Australes Pass is what makes hopping between them on one set of flights practical.

Are the Austral Islands good for swimming and snorkelling?

Raivavae's lagoon is lovely and calm, but the Australs overall are cooler and more about nature and culture than warm-water resorts. I set expectations toward whales, caves and birdlife rather than overwater bungalows.
