Australes Pass Islands: Rurutu, Tubuai and Raivavae

The first time I flew south to Rurutu, I was not expecting to share the water with humpback whales within sight of the runway, but that is exactly what the Australs gave me. These islands sit well south of Tahiti, the air is cooler, and the pace is slower than anywhere else I have travelled in French Polynesia. I have used the Australes Pass to string Rurutu, Tubuai and Raivavae together on a single loop, and it changed how I think about this part of the country. This guide walks through what each island is actually like to land on. I will keep the practical notes honest, because the Australs reward travellers who plan a little.

Rurutu, where whales come close

Rurutu is the island people fly down for between roughly July and October, when humpback whales gather offshore to calve. I have watched them from a small boat and, on a calm day, slipped into the water with a licensed guide a respectful distance away. Beyond the whales, Rurutu is a place of raised limestone cliffs and caves that locals will happily show you. It is rugged rather than postcard-flat, and I like it for that.

Tubuai and its wide green lagoon

Tubuai is the administrative heart of the Australs and the flattest of the three, ringed by a broad lagoon that turns every shade of green and blue. I rented a bicycle and circled most of the island in an afternoon, passing taro fields and small churches. It is not built for resort tourism, which is the point; you stay in family pensions and eat what the island grows. Bring cash and patience, and you will be looked after well.

Raivavae and getting between the islands

Raivavae is the one that stops people mid-sentence, a green ridge wrapped in a lagoon dotted with white-sand motu. I spent a morning being paddled out to a sandbar and could have stayed all day. Air Tahiti links these islands on limited schedules, so the Australes Pass is the sensible way to connect them rather than booking legs piecemeal. Frequencies, routes and fares can change between seasons, so confirm the current details when you book.

Frequently asked questions

When can I see whales around Rurutu?

Humpback whales are generally present off Rurutu from about July to October, with peak sightings in the middle of that window. Exact timing varies year to year, so check locally before you commit to dates.

How many days do the Austral Islands need?

I would give the Australs at least five to seven days across two or three islands. Flights are not daily, so short hops feel rushed and you risk losing a day to a schedule change.

Are there resorts in the Austral Islands?

No large resorts. You stay in family-run pensions, which is part of the appeal. Book ahead, because rooms are limited and fill up around the whale season.
