Tuamotu Pass for Divers: Rangiroa and Fakarava

If you ask me where I have done my best diving in the Pacific, the answer is the Tuamotus, and it is not close. The atolls of Rangiroa and Fakarava are built around passes where the open ocean pours in and out with the tide, and that current is exactly what concentrates the sharks, rays and schooling fish. The Tuamotu Pass lets me reach both atolls by air instead of burning days on a boat. I have drifted through Fakarava's south pass in a wall of grey reef sharks and surfaced grinning every time. Here is how I plan a diving trip that earns those moments.

Rangiroa's Tiputa pass

Rangiroa is one of the world's largest atolls, and the Tiputa pass is its signature drift dive, where dolphins, grey reef sharks and big pelagics ride the incoming tide. I dive it with a local operator on the flood, when visibility opens up and the marine life stacks into the channel. Currents here are strong and the dive is best suited to divers with some drift experience. I always dive within my training and follow the operator's briefing to the letter.

Fakarava's south pass

Fakarava, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, is famous for the Tumakohua pass in the south, where hundreds of grey reef sharks hold in the current. It is one of the few places I have felt genuinely surrounded by sharks and completely at ease, because the animals are focused on the tide, not on us. I book a multi-day package near the south pass so I can time dives to slack and flood rather than racing back and forth across the atoll.

Gear, timing and getting there

I bring my own mask, computer and a reef hook where operators allow it, and I confirm rental gear in advance. The diving is tide-driven, so I plan around the lunar calendar with my operator. Flights between Tahiti and the atolls are limited and seasonal, and routings and fares change, so I confirm the current Air Tahiti schedule and pass terms at booking and treat the plan as subject to change.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need advanced certification to dive the Tuamotu passes?

The passes involve real current, so operators often expect drift experience and a minimum number of logged dives. I confirm the requirements with each operator and dive within my own training.

When is the best time to dive Rangiroa and Fakarava?

Diving is good much of the year, but conditions and marine gatherings vary by season and tide. I plan dives around the tides with my operator and confirm timing before booking.

How do I get between the two atolls?

By air on limited inter-island flights covered by the pass. Schedules and routings vary, so I confirm the current Air Tahiti options when I book.
