The Marquesas feel like a different country from the lagoons most people picture when they think of French Polynesia. There are almost no fringing reefs here, so instead of turquoise shallows you get cliffs dropping straight into the sea and valleys carved deep into volcanic rock. I came for the carving, the archaeology and the scenery, and left wishing I'd booked more nights. The Marquesas Pass links the main islands, and because they're far out, I confirm the current flight details with Air Tahiti when I plan.
Nuku Hiva, the obvious first stop
Most Marquesas trips start on Nuku Hiva, the largest island and the main air link. The Taipivai and Hatiheu valleys are full of old stone platforms and tiki, and the drive across the island past Mount Muake is one I still remember. I'd give it several nights and use it to find my feet before going further out.

Hiva Oa for art and history
Hiva Oa is where Paul Gauguin and the singer Jacques Brel are buried, and the island has some of the largest stone tiki in the Pacific at the Iipona site. It's smaller and quieter than Nuku Hiva, and I found the carving tradition very much alive in the villages. This is the cultural heart of the group for me.
Fatu Hiva for the scenery
Fatu Hiva is the most remote of the inhabited Marquesas and, to my eye, the most dramatic — the Bay of Virgins is hemmed in by sharp green spires. Getting there takes planning, often by boat from a neighbouring island, so I treat it as a goal rather than a casual add-on and confirm the connections well ahead.

Frequently asked questions
How much time do I need in the Marquesas?
Because the islands are far out and flights aren't frequent, I'd plan at least a week and ideally more. Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa each deserve a few nights, and reaching Fatu Hiva takes extra time on top.
Are the Marquesas good for beach holidays?
Not really. There are few reefs and lagoons here, so come for the mountains, archaeology and carving rather than for snorkelling. The Tuamotus or Society Islands are the better choice if you want lagoon time.
Is the Marquesas Pass the same as the airline?
No. Air Tahiti operates the flights to and around the Marquesas, and the Marquesas Pass is the multi-island flight pass we arrange for travellers through Far & Away Adventures.
