The Discovery Pass is the one I reach for when I want range rather than a single beach. It reaches from Tahiti out to the Tuamotu atolls and all the way to the remote Marquesas, which are unlike anywhere else in French Polynesia. We learned the hard way that this is a trip to pace, not to rush. The Marquesas in particular are rugged, green and far, and they deserve real time. This is how I would plan the loop now.
Tahiti as your starting point
Almost every journey begins in Tahiti, where the international flights land and the domestic network fans out from Papeete. We usually spend a night or two here at the start, stocking up and adjusting to the time zone, and sometimes circle the island by car. It is busier than the outer islands, but it is a practical base. Do not write it off as just an airport.

The Tuamotu atolls in the middle
From Tahiti the pass swings through the Tuamotus, low coral atolls like Rangiroa and Fakarava where the lagoon is the whole point. We break the journey here for a few days of snorkelling and diving before the longer leg out east. It is a natural halfway pause that keeps the trip from feeling like one long flight day. The water does the work of resetting you.
The Marquesas and pacing the pass
The Marquesas are the payoff: steep volcanic islands like Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa, with deep bays, carved tiki and a culture all their own. We gave them four nights and still wished for more. Because these are long sectors on a domestic network, the Discovery Pass is far simpler than booking each leg, but flights are not daily and schedules shift by season, so confirm the current details when you book and leave buffer days.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Discovery Pass worth it for a short trip?
Not really. Its strength is range across Tahiti, the Tuamotus and the Marquesas, which needs time. For under ten days, a closer pass usually makes more sense.
How remote are the Marquesas?
Very. They sit over 1,400 kilometres from Tahiti, with limited flights and few large hotels. That distance is the appeal, but it means you plan around the schedule rather than the other way round.
How many days does this loop need?
We would set aside about two weeks to do Tahiti, the Tuamotus and the Marquesas comfortably, with buffer days built in around the longer flights.
