The Islands I Send Travellers To First

Whenever someone asks me which islands they should see in French Polynesia, I have to stop myself from listing all of them. The truth is that a good first trip leans on a handful of islands that each do something distinct, rather than a long checklist. I have flown these routes enough times to have firm opinions about which ones reward the effort of getting there. The Air Tahiti Pass makes it realistic to combine several, so the question becomes which few, not whether you can. Here are the islands I reach for first and why.

My short list and what each one is for

Bora Bora is the one most people picture, and the wide lagoon does live up to it; I send couples there for the classic overwater stay. Moorea is my everyday favourite because it is a short flight from Tahiti and packs jagged peaks, a calm lagoon and easy hiking into a small space. Tahiti itself deserves more than a night, especially the wilder south coast and the markets in Papeete.

For travellers who want fewer crowds, I point to Huahine for its low-key pace, and to Raiatea and Taha'a for sailing and a more local rhythm.

The islands worth it only if you have time

The Marquesas are dramatic and deeply cultural, but they are far north and need real time, so I save them for second trips or longer holidays. The Tuamotu atolls, like Rangiroa and Fakarava, are for divers above all; if the underwater world is your reason for coming, they jump up the list. The Australs are quieter still and suit travellers chasing something off the usual route.

I am honest with people that these add flying time, and that the payoff is real but only if your schedule can absorb it.

Combining them with the Air Tahiti Pass

The Air Tahiti Pass is a multi-island air pass from Air Tahiti, and the named passes cover different clusters of islands. At Far & Away Adventures we match the pass to your short list so you are not buying coverage you will not use. A Society Islands loop needs a different pass than a trip reaching out to the Marquesas.

One honest caveat: exact routes, fares and schedules change through the year, so confirm the current details when you book rather than relying on last season's map.

Frequently asked questions

Which single island should I choose if I only have time for one?

If I had to pick one, Moorea, because it gives you mountains, lagoon and easy access from Tahiti without a long flight. Bora Bora is the alternative if the overwater stay is the whole point.

Are the Marquesas worth adding to a first trip?

Usually not, simply because of the flying time involved. They are remarkable, but I save them for travellers with longer schedules or a second visit.
