Best Australes Pass Stops in the Austral Islands

If you only have time for part of the Austral Islands, the order you visit them in matters more than people expect. I have flown the Australes Pass as a full loop and as a shorter there-and-back, and both can work if you choose your stops well. The Australs are the cool, southern edge of French Polynesia, quieter and greener than the postcard islands. This piece is about where to spend your limited days rather than a full encyclopaedia. I will tell you what I would cut if I had to.

Start with Rurutu if you want whales

If your trip falls between roughly July and October, I would anchor it on Rurutu for the humpback whales that gather offshore. Seeing them from a small boat, and with a licensed guide from the water, is the single strongest reason to come south in those months. Outside whale season, Rurutu still offers caves and cliffs, but it loses its headline act. Time your visit and it is an easy first choice.

Add Raivavae for the lagoon

Raivavae would be my second stop for pure scenery, a green island ringed by a lagoon and sandy motu that rival anywhere in the country. I spent a morning out on a sandbar and barely saw another soul. It is small and services are limited, so set your expectations toward pensions and home cooking. That simplicity is exactly why I send people here.

Fit in Tubuai and plan the flights

Tubuai is the practical hub and worth a stop if your schedule routes through it, with its broad lagoon and flat, bikeable roads. On a tight trip I would treat it as a connection rather than a destination in its own right. Air Tahiti serves the Australs on limited, seasonal schedules, so the pass is the sane way to link these islands. Routes and frequencies can change, so confirm the current details when you book.

Frequently asked questions

Which Austral island should I prioritise?

Rurutu in whale season, then Raivavae for scenery. Tubuai is useful mainly as the transport hub unless you have spare days to slow right down.

Can I visit the Australs as a quick side trip?

You can, but flights are not daily, so even a short visit needs a few buffer days. Rushing risks losing a day to a schedule change.

Do I need to book pensions in advance?

Yes. Rooms are limited across all three islands and fill up around whale season, so reserve well ahead rather than arriving on spec.
